As technology continues to span more and more, the amount of data we put out on the web greatly increases. And although these advancements in technology are taking innovations to the next level, it allows hackers greater access to our protected data and information.

For organizations in the 21st century, this is a scary thought. Not only are companies responsible for protecting its employees, but there are also responsible for the information they collect from their clients. Because of the new threats, the need and demand for Information Security Officers has greatly increased.

Information Security Officers play a vital role in protecting organizations from dangerous hackers and possible viruses they can leave behind. For the company, Information Security Officers are responsible for implementing and enforcing security policies to protect the organization’s computer infrastructure, network and all its data from the potential threat of hackers.

The job growth for Information Security Officers is expected to grow 37% from the year 2012 to 2022. This presents a great opportunity for graduating students, as this career path not only is growing, but will continue to remain in demand even as we innovate and technology changes.

If you would like to learn more about information security management I would recommend taking MIS 418. This course explores information security issues in the areas most commonly encountered in the business environment, using real-life situations. It illustrates how information security addresses current legal requirements, technical threats, and social environments. Throughout the semester, you will examine information security history, legal issues, the development and enforcement of policies and standards, risk management, current threats, technologies, and security program implementation.

If you are thinking of choosing Information Security as a possible career path, it is important to know the degree and experience requirements. A bachelor’s degree in a field related to computer science or information systems is required for any entry level and a Master’s degree becomes needed for job advancement in the future, however, it is not always required. Like a master’s degree, certifications are recommended.
