How the Internet of Things is Changing Cyber Security & Your Future

The internet of things has changed the way we interact with technology today. As more smart devices are introduced, the quality of life has improved and the efficiency of these systems has increased. Connected systems can now take simple patterns of data and turn them into viable information that can be used in association with other devices.

The Internet of things and the Device Mesh are connecting more and more devices each day to our expansive network. However, with all the information and data being passed through these devices; the threat to cyber security becomes a greater concern. Hackers now have access to a new gateway of outlets that could potentially lead to unauthorized access to private and protected information.

This Device Mesh is only going to continue to grow as new devices are produced and more information is stored on the cloud or passed through the web. To the uneducated and unknowing, this concern may not seen too precedent at the moment, but this issue is only going to rise.

This future of connected devices does more than just open doors to hackers, however, it also opens doors to people interested in protecting it. Information Security Officers and fields related to cyber security present new job opportunities for graduating students like yourself.

If you are interested in learning more about cyber security, you should look into MIS 418 (Information Security Management) which is offered here at CSUSM. This course has been previously taught by Teresa Macklin, the Information Security Officer of CSUSM. Her 2 unit course covers risk, response, and recovery of security attacks in the business world; cryptography; the characteristics, architecture, and operations of malicious software; information security standards; and U.S compliance laws. Students are exposed to trends and recent attacks as the course is taught based on real business experiences. You can hear about recent attacks on the school over the years and how the IITS team at CSUSM took action.
